1. This year U.S. President Barack Obama visited Kenya, the land where his father was born. His arrival in Nairobi was preceded by speculation that he would dodge the issue of homosexuality - which is illegal in Kenya - so as not to offend his hosts, especially after requests for the American leader to avoid statements in support of gay rights. One such organisation reportedly asked permission for a march to show the president "the differences between a man and a woman". The protest was eventually called off.

2. The aftermath of the kidnapping of more than 200 girls from Chibok in Nigeria on the night of April 14, 2014, continues, with the Nigerian army's discovery and rescue of young women - who've not been proven to be the missing Chibok girls - in the Sambisa Forest, an area considered a stronghold for Boko Haram. Of the girls rescued in Borno State, many were described as "visibly pregnant".

3. Roel van der Veen wrote for Addis Standard: So the thing is that as a country you can indeed "leave" a poor region, but that at some point your example will be followed by others, who will try to leave too - with a headline that drew quite a bit of interest from allAfrica readers - Ethiopia Should Leave Africa.
