Nigeria: Kenya's Kipton Wins Lagos Marathon

7 February 2016

Kenyan athlete, Abraham Kipton, on Saturday edged a strong field of 20,000 runners to emerge the winner of the Access Bank sponsored Lagos City Marathon. Kipton coasted home in 2hrs 16mins and 19 seconds to pick the first prize cheque of $50,000 (about N15 million). Beaming with smiles at the Eko Atlantic finish point of the 42.5 kilometre race that flagged off at the National Stadium in Lagos, Kipton gushed: "I am surprised that I won the race. I did not come here (Lagos) hoping to win, though I trained very hard. I am however glad that I am the champion."

The Kenya runner, with IAAF Gold Label ranking, further expressed his appreciation to Nigerians that lined the route, cheering all the marathoners. "I like Nigerians. You are very warm-hearted. Very good people... I hope to return here next year for the Lagos City Marathon."
