High-Level Panel to Discuss Role of Macroeconomics in Structural Transformation

Addis-Ababa — The Economic Commission for Africa will hold a High Level Forum on macroeconomic frameworks for Africa's structural transformation, Thursday 3 April 2016 in Addis-Ababa (Ethiopia), on the margins of the African Development Week.

Panelists will include Mr. Carlos Lopes, Executive Secretary of the ECA and Mr. Augustin Matata Ponyo, Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo, who will make a key note address. Participants will discuss contemporary and emerging issues related to macroeconomic frameworks, which are considered as key tools for the structural transformation of African countries.

Recent ECA research have revealed that setting up development-oriented policies is crucial for sustainable and inclusive structural transformation. According to Mr Lopes, actors need to set up a coherent set of policies which address the three pillars of structural transformation: human resources, infrastructures and institutions. Fiscal, monetary and financial policies are also key elements of this framework, and should be complemented by policies in such other areas as trade, technology and social services.
