An application by the government to appeal a ruling that Polish immigrant Janusz Walus be released on parole has been denied by the Pretoria High Court, News24 reports.

Walus and co-conspirator Clive Derby-Lewis assassinated Hani at his Boksburg home in 1993 and were sentenced to death after their arrest. This sentence was commuted to life imprisonment after the death penalty was abolished in 1995.

The history of Chris Hani

Chris Hani was the General Secretary of the SACP and member of the national executive committee of the ANC. He fought as part of the joint ANC-SACP liberation army, uMkhonto we Sizwe where he eventually assumed the role of Chief of Staff.

The 23rd anniversary of Hani's death was commemorated by a march to the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Service Centre in Pretoria.
