Nigeria: Niger Lead Poisoning - Between Medical Challenge and Economic Benefits

One year after an outbreak of lead poisoning killed 28 children in Shikira village in Niger State, illegal artisanal mining for fast economic gains is still prevalent while implementation of recommendations for remediation of affected communities is yet to begin, in spite of reports that more children could be at risk of infection. About one year ago, the news broke of the death of 28 children below the age of five in Shikira village of Madaka district, Rafi local government area of Niger State. The villagers had termed the deaths mysterious especially because some of the affected children suffered convulsion and weakness of limbs.
