Progress On Africa Mining Vision Presented At African Union

24 May 2016

Addis Ababa — The African Mineral Development Centre (AMDC) is pleased to be participating in the First Session of the Specialized Technical Committee on Trade and Industry and Minerals (STC-TIM) taking place in Addis Ababa from 16to 24 May 2016. The STC-TIM is responsible for preparing projects and programmes in the areas of trade, industry and mining and submitting them to the Executive Council, and the role of the Africa Mining Vision will be included in this important agenda.

On Wednesday 18 May, the AMDC presented its workplan and progress on key initiatives such as the Geological and Mineral Information System (GMIS) strategy, the African Mineral Governance Framework (AMGF) and the African Mining Legislation Atlas (AMLA). The AMDC further elaborated on the progress of the AMV across the continent; it has already been adapted into country legislation in Lesotho and the process is well underway in 24 other countries including Ghana, Guinea Conakry, Malawi, Sierra Leone, and Zambia, among others.

"The Africa Mining Vision has a key role to play in realising Africa's potential through industrialistation, linkages and creating a knowledge economy," said Paul Msoma from the AMDC. "We are proud to be contributing to the socio-economic development of the continent."

The objectives of the STC-TIM event are to provide strategic advice to the Policy Organs of the African Union, ensure implementation of agreed programs and projects as well as establish synergies and linkages in the areas of trade, industry and mining in line with African Union's Agenda 2063 and its Ten Year Implementation Plan. The event continues this week with AMDC's participation at the conference of ministers and concludes with AU adoption of several key initiatives, including the GMIS, AMGF and AMLA, mentioned above.

Note for editors on the Africa Mining Vision:

Formally adopted by African heads of state in 2009, the Africa Mining Vision (AMV) is the continent's own response to tackling the paradox of great mineral wealth existing side by side with pervasive poverty. Simply put, the AMV outlines the roadmap to the transparent, equitable and optimal exploitation of mineral resources to underpin broad-based sustainable growth and socio-economic development in Africa.
