Cape Town — Addis Standard tweeted that the Ethiopian government says it took "military measures against Eritrean forces in response to the latter's cross-border provocations".

According to the government's communication office, the "proportional measure ... effectively disabled Eritrea's military capacity to strike", and the Eritrean goverment's actions "will decide on it's next military step".

In a statement, Eritrea says it "repulsed" Ethiopia's attack, claiming Ethiopian troops sustained "heavy casualties".

Meanwhile, Horn Affairs reports that heavy fighting in the Tsorena area of the Ethiopian Eritrea border "subsided", which residents of nearby towns apparently confirmed.

The website went on to report that the fighting continued early on Monday morning.
