The Agriculture and Agro-industries Department of the African Development Bank (OSAN) will host a seminar on "Reshaping African food systems: The role of technological and policy innovations".
Dr. Shenggen Fan, Director of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), will deliver a presentation on the topic during the event scheduled to take place on September 5, 2016 at the AfDB's headquarters in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire.
The African Development Bank seeks to explore new ways to create an adequate food system in Africa. Food security and nutrition is improving in Africa, but the continent still faces multiple emerging burdens of malnutrition. The coexistence of hunger, undernutrition and obesity remains one of the greatest challenges in the region.
The seminar will be an opportunity for development partners to contribute to the conceptualisation of a new food system. This system must be productive and efficient, inclusive, nutrition and health-driven, environmentally sustainable and climate-smart, and business-friendly in order to deliver multiple-win outcomes.
Dr. Fan is expected to provide an overview of the state of food security and nutrition in Africa, and discuss ways to reshape Africa's food system with an emphasis on technological and policy innovations.
The seminar will bring together AfDB experts, policy-makers and other development institutions. The aim is to contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by reshaping Africa's food system to ensure that multiple SDGs are met by 2030.
