The African Development Bank's drive towards implementing its fifth High 5 priority - "Improve the quality of life for the people of Africa" - was boosted on October 13, 2016, when the Provincial Governor for Zambezia in central Mozambique, Abdul Razak Noormahomed, launched a newly completed and rehabilitated Small Piped Water Scheme in Lioma community in the Gurue district.
The inauguration brought together many community members from the region. The newly rehabilitated water supply was financed as part of the ongoing UA 5.27 million (approximately US $7 million) African Development Fund loan and €6 million Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Initiative Trust Fund (RWSSI TF) Mozambique Rural Water Supply Project in Nampula and Zambezia. It consists of water sourced from a spring and fortified through connecting three existing boreholes in the area to the system.
As at the time of inaugurating the newly completed water scheme, over 3,000 persons, comprised of about 60% women and 40% men, are benefiting from the project, through 170 households directly connected to the system, and the remainder using standpipes on the streets, managed by area wide water committees.
Speaking on the occasion, Noormahomed appealed to the community to cooperate with their local water committees, who have already been well trained by the project, to ensure the water scheme is well managed and will be sustained for a long time.
