Somalia: Seven Militants Killed in Qandala Battle

A military official says Somalia's semi-autonomous northern Puntland regional forces have killed at least seven ISIL fighters on Saturday following a battle at Bashashin area near the coastal city of Qandala in Bari region.

Speaking to Radio Shabelle, Ahmed Muse Nur, a senior military commander said Puntland troops began an offensive towards Qandala on Saturday to drive pro-Islamic state militants out of the town.

Nur added several ISIL militants have been captured alive during Saturday's battle near Qandala town. He vowed that his forces would continue fighting the militants till they are eliminated from Qandala.

Heavily armed small number of pro-Islamic state fighters led by Sheikh Abdulkadir Mumin, a former Al shabaab leader have captured Qandala in October and became the first ISIS stronghold in Somalia.
