It is our profound belief that our people and our country have embraced the democratic breakthrough brought about by the 1994 dispensation ,which led to the abolishment of the former homelands and an establishment of a united South Africa. That in itself implied the abolishment of all symbols, flags, coat of arms and everything that identified with the old apartheid system and introduction of single symbols, flag and coat of arms for a new democratic country.
The history of our country was indeed a horrible and unpleasant one ,as it sought to divide our country along racial and tribal lines. It is a history that our alliance, led by the African National Congress fought to defeat and to ensure that never again, shall our country retrogress into the evil system of apartheid,.
It therefore both deplorable and distasteful that organizers of His Majesty King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana Fun Walk held on the 08th September 2017 ,chose to undermine our hard won democracy and freedom by using the former Venda homeland Coat of Arms in their paraphernalia. This kind of provocative behaviour and attitude does not assist to rebuild relations amongst the different inhabitants in the Vhembe region.
As COSATU in Limpopo we therefore demand the following:
That the organizers of the event apologize to the people of our province and the country for using the old Venda homeland Coat of Arms;
That the former Venda homeland Coat of Arms be immediately removed in all official and unofficial platforms;
That the Premier and the MEC of COGHTA should immediately investigate the usage of apartheid symbols in our province;
Call on our people to reject any attempt to revive the evil of apartheid system and contribute towards building a united, non-racial, non-sexist, democratic and prosperous South Africa;
That government should fast track the promulgation of a law that will criminalize racism and the usage of old apartheid symbols in public spaces.
