South Africa: Suspect Arrested in Lavender Hill, Facing Numerous Gun Charges

Western Cape: Reckless and negligent handling of firearms and shooting in public spaces will not be tolerated by the SAPS. On Tuesday, 12 December 2017 at about 01:20 members of Steenberg Crime Prevention Unit were doing patrols in St Christopher Street, Lavender Hill, when they heard shots going off in the vicinity of St Boniface Road.

The fearless members proceeded in that direction and saw an unknown male running with an object in his hand, that resembled a firearm. The suspect ran into a yard in St Bonaventure Street. He was seen throwing the suspected firearm onto the roof. The police members soon apprehended the suspect who tried to hide in the ceiling. They then got onto the roof and recovered a black Z88 9mm Parabellum firearm with one magazine and nine x9mm rounds of ammunition. The serial number of firearm was filed off.

The 18 year old suspect was arrested for the possession of an unlicensed firearm; the discharging of a firearm in a public place; the illegal possession of ammunition and the possession of a prohibited firearm.

He will appear in the Wynberg Magistrates' court as soon as he has been charged.
