Kenya: Brake Failure Causes Bus to Ram Into Trailer, Knocks Down Cops

Kericho — Three people, including a police officer, died on Christmas Day in a road accident at the Kericho -- Kisumu junction.

The accident occurred at around 7pm when a 52-seater bus - which is registered to a Sacco that plies the Thika Road route - was ferrying passengers to Kisumu when it reportedly developed a serious mechanical problem and collided head on with a trailer which was heading to the opposite direction.

Kericho police say the out-of-control bus then hit and killed a Traffic Police Officer at a roadblock he was manning.

The driver of the bus sustained serious injuries on the head.

Another Police Officer also manning the roadblock sustained slight injuries on the right lower leg.

Police confirmed that they have so far accounted for 31 passengers who were receiving treatment at the Kericho County Hospital.

The others are still unaccounted for as witnesses report some passengers jumped out of the moving bus on realising that it had developed mechanical problems.
