South Africa: Illegal Miner Killed By Falling Rock

A 44-year-old illegal miner died on Wednesday morning after a rock fell on him while he was mining in Maandagshoek near Driekop in Limpopo, police said.

Spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said Diphasong Commence Lerutla was mining chrome when the incident occurred.

Police were deployed to the scene shortly after 10:00 where Lerutla was declared dead.

Mojapelo said there had been a steady increase in illegal mining along the R37 between Lebowakgomo and Burgersfort.

Several people have already been arrested and mining machinery confiscated.

"We call on all members of the community to halt this tendency of engaging in illegal mining."
