Botswana: Khama Applauds Residents for Support

Tonota — President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama has appreciated the support that Tonota residents have given him during his term of office.

Speaking at his farewell kgotla meeting on February 2, the President also thanked them for voting for Mr Thapelo Olopeng as their Member of Parliament, noting that he also proved to be a capable minister who could be relied upon.

He mentioned that when he appointed MP Olopeng into his Cabinet, many people believed that this was because of their friendship, but said that the Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development had proven his detractors wrong.

"I chose my Cabinet based on the strengths of individuals and their capabilities. Young people can attest to MP Olopeng's commitment to youth development," he said.

The President also thanked residents for always understanding when the Member of Parliament could not visit them due to Cabinet commitments which took him all over the country.

On other issues, President Khama informed them that when he became Vice President, he was sad to leave the Botswana Defence Force as he believed that he still had a lot to offer in the army.

However, he asserted that he had to answer the call of the nation by serving in another sphere of leadership.

He also promised to continue working with residents even in retirement.

For his part, Kgosi Bokamoso Radipitse of Tonota informed the President that he learnt a lot from his leadership style despite the challenges that he faced during his presidency.

"You demonstrated leadership both on domestic and international issues and you gave dignity to the underprivileged by enacting policies oriented towards their upliftment," he highlighted.

Member of Parliament for Tonota, Mr Olopeng noted that President Khama assumed leadership in the army at an early age, saying that was a sign that he was trusted to be a responsible leader.

He also added that he had worked with the President for 38 years and could attest to the fact that he embodied the true values of leadership and did not look down on the poor.

According to Mr Olopeng, the President proved his mettle during the global economic recession by providing leadership and steering the economy in the right path.

Also, he highlighted that during President Khama's term, youth were empowered to play an active role in the economy.

"The gifts from the residents of Tonota are a true testament of how people feel about your leadership," he mentioned.

Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Mr Kenneth Matambo also mentioned that he worked well with the President and described him as a great leader.

Consequently, he noted that during SADC meetings President Khama was trusted and considered a strategist and said his leadership was responsible for ensuring that Botswana remained on her feet during the global economic meltdown.
