Uganda: UPDF Ready for Role in Standard Gauge Railway Construction

Kampala — The Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) has said it is ready to be part of the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).

The army's commitment to the Standard Gauge Railway was reiterated during a ceremony to unveil 10 UPDF engineers who had just returned from a 3 month training course in China.

The East African SGR is a proposal for rejuvenating railways serving mainly Kenya, Uganda and adding railways serving Tanzania, Rwanda and South Sudan. Main purpose of the Plan is to make cargo transport between major ports at the coast of the Indian Ocean and the hinterland more efficient, faster and cheaper, therefore allowing for a better economic development of East Africa.

The plan is managed by infrastructure ministers from participating East African Community countries.
