Ethiopia: EPRDF Council to Elect Chairperson Next Week

Addis Ababa — The Council of the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) will elect its chairperson in the upcoming week, Office of the Council said.

In his briefing to local journalists, Office Head, Shiferaw Shigute said the Council will meet to elect the chairperson following the conclusion of the Executive Committee's meeting scheduled for Sunday, 11 March 2018.

During its deliberations the Executive Committee will evaluate the implementation by the member parties of the decisions made during its last meeting.

It is also expected to put directions after discussing on the reports of the four parties regarding the appraisals they conducted recently.

Shiferaw said that the meeting of the Executive Committee was delayed for the front has a profound stand on prioritizing the restoration of peace and stability which will be a prerequisite to respond to any of the public demands.

The EPRDF Council will immediately gather to elect the new chairperson as well as other vacant positions as per the by-laws of the front, following the conclusion of the Executive's meeting.

The Council is also expected to decide on the postponement of the general assembly to August which should have been held on March.

In responding to whether there had been any difference among the four members of the front in declaring the state of emergency, Shiferaw said "there was no individual or party who voiced against the importance of the state of emergency."

Noting that this is not the first time that the need for transitional government is raised, Shiferaw said "the country has a constitution and everything will be done in accordance to that."
