The Department of Water and Sanitation to host the media and a delegation from the Nigerian Integrated Water Resources Management Commission at the Vaal Dam
The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) will on Wednesday, 18th of April host the media and the Nigerian Integrated Water Resources Management Commission at the Vaal Dam.
The DWS acceded to a request from NIWRMC to undertake a technical study tour of South Africa to share water regulatory best practices. The other purpose is for both countries to exchange water governance strategies between them.
Specific areas of interest include Water Use Authorisation Process, Water Regulatory System, Dam Safety Office/Deputy Director Office, Corporate Services, Electronic Water Use Licence Application and Authorisation System (eWULAAS) and National Integrated Water Information System (NIWIS), as well as Water Tribunal processes, Water Use Licence Registration and Revenue Collection (WARMS), and the Water Billing System processes.
The Vaal dam remains a critical part of the Integrated Vaal River System (IVRS), therefore supplying the Gauteng Province mainly as well as the cornerstones of the South African economy, i.e. SASOL and ESKOM. Gauteng is also the the heartbeat of the regional and ultimately the continental economic heartbeat.
As the IVRS has received good rains in the recent past, the Vaal Dam has over the past few weeks reached levels of over 100% resulting in some spillages. This has not meant and does not mean that the back of the drought has been broken and therefore continued wise use of the resource is still necessary.
Members of the media are invited as follows, including those requiring transport:
Date: Wednesday, 18 April 2018
Venue: Vaal Dam, Deneysville, Free State
