Ethiopia: Attorney General Drops Charges of 114 Prisoners

The Office of the Attorney General relieved 114 prisoners, who were allegedly arrested for terrorism and other crimes, dropping charges against them On April 11, 2018.

Getachew Ambaye, the Attorney General, passed the decision with a written letter to his deputies for execution.

Releasing them as part of the Executive Committees of the ruling party, Ethiopian Peoples' Revolutionary Democratic Front's (EPRDF) decision that was made after its meeting. The former Prime Minister Hailemaraim Desalegn announced the decision, including dropping charges and releasing prisoners to widen the political space.

The office also ordered the release of 500 politicians and activists in January 2018, which raised the total number of released since January to more than 1300.
