Nigeria: Senate, Thugs and the Mace - Understanding Parliamentary Misconduct

On Wednesday, five thugs allegedly walked into the Senate, seized the mace, the symbol of authority of the Senate, walked out, entered a waiting SUV and drove out.

After their departure, all hell broke loose. An emergency closed session was held to discuss the brazen challenge to Nigerian democracy, which some described as an attempted coup. It was said that: "This action is an act of treason, as it is an attempt to overthrow a branch of the Federal Government of Nigeria by force, and it must be treated as such. This action is also an affront on the legislature, and the Leadership of the House has come to express their support against this action".
