The helpless farm worker was left on the scene unconscious and bleeding without anyone calling ambulance or police. Later they called for a driver to come and collect him to a farm and shifted him to another bakkie then take him to a nearby clinic.
This worker was kept alone at the back of an open bakkie bleeding and not covered. What is more disturbing is that the incident happened at about 11h00am at the farm between Derby and Ventersdorp but they choose to pass Ventersdorp knowing very well that the Potchefstroom road is under construction and that it will take the bakkie more time to get there. The worker died in early hours on Tuesday 8 May 2018.
The family especially the mother of the deceased was not notified about the incident; she was told about the painful incident by a co-worker late in the evening. She personally called the owner to enquire about her son only then she was told that her son was involved in an accident and he is in hospital.
The family went to Ventersdorp Police station to open a case and police failed to assist them saying that they can't open a case on hearsay, and that they cannot go to the farmers place because it is a private property. The victim who is the deceased was supposed to come and open the case.
COSATU has the pictures of the deceased and we have interacted with the family in and we will make sure that those who are responsible are brought to book. We also have workers who are prepared to be witnesses not only on this matter but on other similar incidents that have happened at the same farm.
The federation is appealing to relevant role-players particularly law enforcement agencies, Department of Labour and SAHRC to assist our poor farm workers and communities, especially at Ventersdorp without fear of favour.
We call upon the MEC of community safety, Minister of Police, Minister of Labour and SAHRC to urgently investigate this matter and all other related ones at the same farm. Farm workers and the community of Ventersdorp have lost confidence on some of our officials and police officers of Ventersdorp.
We appeal to Good Samaritans', business people and government to please assist the family of Makgobe to bury their son, who was the family's breadwinner. Cosatu will attend the funeral on Saturday 19 May 2018 at Tshing Location Ventersdorp.
We invite all media houses for coverage
