Somalia: Al-Shabaab Attacks NISA Checkpoint Outside Mogadishu

Armed Fighters from the Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab militant group have staged an overnight ambush attack against Somali security forces manning a checkpoint near Mogadishu. The assault has led to a heavy gunfight between the militants and Somalia's National Intelligence and Security Agency [NISA] forces at Siinka-Dheer area, outside the capital.

The fighting which raged on for about 30 minutes has caused casualties on both warring sides, but, the number of the fatalities have not yet been established. Reports said NISA officers temporarily halted the movement of the public transportations between Mogadishu and Afgoye following last night's attack on the checkpoint.

Somali security officials are to yet to comment on the incident, which was the latest in series of attacks on the army personnel since the start of the Holy month of Ramadan.
