Tanzania: State-TLS Showdown Looms Over Law Amendment

Dar es Salaam — A showdown is looming between the government and Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) over planned amendment of the TLS Act. TLS president Fatma Karume has written to members alerting them about proposed amendments tabled in the just ended parliamentary sitting in the Written Laws (Miscellaneous Amendment) Bill No. 3 of 2018.

In the amendments drafted by the Attorney General's Chambers, TLS complains that the AG is attempting to give himself rights within the bar above those of all other members by restraining the democratically elected governing council from making regulations without first consulting with him.
