Kenya: Wanted Criminal Among 7 Shot Dead in Nairobi

Nairobi — A most wanted criminal was among seven suspected thugs who were gunned down on Friday night in different robbery incidences within Nairobi.

Nairobi Police Commissioner in charge of staff operations James Thathi told Capital Newsbeat that the thug nicknamed 'Kifaru' was shot after an ambush set up before a robbery at Mowlem Heights Estate in Maili Saba area.

He said the officers had prior knowledge of plans to rob a mall in the area and used this to waylay the thugs.

"We had prior knowledge of the attack and our officers laid an ambush. One of the suspects, who is well known to police and the public and is also on our most wanted list, was also there, and we managed to shoot him dead," Thathi said.

Four other suspects were shot dead in Buruburu after they robbed a woman of her purse and mobile phone.

"The four men were all on a motorbike and when they robbed the woman, she screamed, alerting our officers who responded. They were able to recover two pistols, six rounds of ammunition, the lady's handbag and one phone," he said.
