The Compliance Review and Mediation Unit (BCRM) of the African Development Bank Group is organizing a sub-regional information workshop on the Bank's "Independent Review Mechanism: A Recourse Avenue for Communities Around Bank--Financed Projects" from 18 to 19 September 2018 in Yaoundé, Cameroon.

This event, fully coordinated with the Bank country offices, is part of the BCRM outreach activities planned for 2018. It will bring together about 35 participants representing civil society organizations and projects implementation units responsible for the realization of Bank-financed projects in the Central Region of Africa.

The meeting is intended to familiarize participants with the mandate and the Operating Rules and Procedures of the IRM. One of the key focus will be information on grievance redress mechanisms to support the people who have been or are likely to be adversely affected by Bank-financed projects, especially due to non-compliance by the Bank with its operational safeguards Standards in their respective countries.

During this two-day workshop, the Director of BCRM and staff responsible for civil society engagement, safeguards standards as well as operations of the Bank, will discuss with the participants the context of developmental projects including public consultations and the role of CSOs in project management. Other key related issues such as accountability, compliance review, problem solving and/or other complaint-handling approaches will be discussed. The workshop will cover capacity-building needs on the above issues. It will also deal with the results of BCRM collaborative approaches in supporting project implementation units and civil society organizations in assisting affected communities in accessing project level grievance-redress processes, in filing their complaints and accessing project level grievance redress processes to avoid escalation of issues to the IRM.

This sub-regional workshop will cover presentations, group discussions, and training. Participants will include representative organizations from Cameroon, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon and Guinea Bissau.
