Nigerians React to National Assembly Siege, Sack of DG DSS

...

The siege to the National Assembly by State Security Service (SSS) operatives, supported by the police, has drawn a lot of reaction from opposition parties and individuals.

This siege came amidst claims of attempts to force Senate President Bukola Saraki out of office.

Scores of senators and members of the House of Representatives were initially blocked from entering the National Assembly premises, but later allowed to move in after threatening to force their way in.

The security operatives who also stopped staff members of the National Assembly as well as journalists and other independent observers of legislative process said they were acting on orders from above.

Below are comments by Nigerians on the social media over the issue.

@chiefow "To all the GULLIBLE Nigerians who are planning to vote for chief 'Tyrant' Buhari, I hope you're seeing what is happening to our legislative democracy?

Your children will ask you.

Get sense in 2019. #SaveOurDemocracy #SiegeOnSenate"

@onile050 "Our CSO are outrightly silent today when the Nigeria democracy was been attacked."

"Who noticed that @EiENigeria @SERAPNigeria and many others have been unnecessarily silent about the #Legislativecoup #SiegeOnSenate. With or without them we will all #SaveOurDemocracy."

@ruthlessanalyst "I think there is more to this #SiegeOnSenate & the Vice President @ProfOsinbajo has taken an impressive & commendable step. I only hope more heads roll to curtail this ugly trend once and for all.

@NigeriaInfoAbj"

@SHYDOO/"Excuses unacceptable for VP @ProfOsinbajo. If he is allegedly not-aware of the #siegeonsenate happening under his watch as the ACTING PRESIDENT, then he is not in charge. HE SHOULD RESIGN FOR THE SAKE OF HIS FAITH AND PROFESSION. #SaveOurDemocracy #DemocracyUnderSiege"

@segalink "The true color of this admin has been revealed. Anti-People/Anti-Democracy. The facts are out there. They don't value the people and only seek to perpetuate themselves in power. While some were locked out of NASS others were allowed through the backdoor.#TruncationOfDemocracy"

@ogundamisi "Masked DSS Men is a no no, this should be condemned by every Nigerian irrespective of party affiliation, we saw same ninja looking DSS operatives in Ekiti and Osun under the @GEJonathan administration, @MBuhari government using same is a terrible low."

The Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, who was called on to check the excesses of security agencies, responded by summoning Lawal Daura, the head of SSS, and Inspector-General Ibrahim Idris.

Mr Daura was later sacked and asked to hand over to the most-senior official behind him, a move that has sent ripples through the country's political and security circles.

While some Nigerians commended the move by the acting president, others doubt the intentions behind his sack saying Mr Daura was only a scapegoat.

@Rouvafe "Osinbajo cannot sack DG DSS or any of Buhari's appointees without the express permission of President Buhari.

"If you ask me, I think Lawal Daura's sack was already agreed upon before PMB travelled. They just needed Osinbajo to execute the job."

@renoomokirir "VP Osinbajo used wisdom to sack Daura. According to villa sources, Osinbajo first of all summoned the DG DSS to his office at exactly 1:15 PM. While he was still talking to Lawal Daura, Laolu @AkandeOJ was directed to release a statement announcing his sack in true mafiosi style!"

@Hailfinger1 "As expected, the failed and dysfunctional @APCNigeria is trying very hard to change the narratives on the sack of the DSS DG, Mr. Lawal Daura, to favour @MBuhari. The truth is that, Daura became a fall-guy because of the failure of the coup.He was sacked to protect the government"

@omojuwa "One more thing; if the Acting President didn't order the DSS blockage like his sack of the DG DSS apparently indicates, the sacked DG should by now be answering questions from investigators. That is what would happen in a country run by sane human beings."

The DSS, in practice, takes directives from the Presidency. Today, the DSS apparently took over the National Assembly in a dramatic show of shame. Then the Acting President fired the DG of DSS, obviously over that show at NASS. So, who is behind the NASS blockade? Messy games.
