Nigeria: UK to Strengthen Democratic Governance in Nigeria

The British High Commission yesterday in Abuja Seeks to Strengthen Democratic governance in Nigeria through support to key legislative bodies, electoral bodies and civil society organizations with technical assistance.

The Deputy High Commissioner, Harriet Thompson said the UN is Set to supporting the National Assembly to be more efficient at doing its job i.e passing legislation to promote and protect Democratic rights and to do so in a way that involves the participation of citizens generally, and more women in particular.

Thompson said " We support INEC to build their capacity to manage elections properly and according to the law, and also ensure that marginalised groups such as women, the disabled and young people are given their opportunity to vote

The Head, Department for International Development In Nigeria, Debbie Palmer said in its effort to ensure the advancement of democracy in Nigeria, the United Kingdom's Department for International Development (DFID) has set aside the sum of £47.4 million to be spent on its project aimed at strengthening democracy in Nigeria.

The project tagged 'Deepening Democracy in Nigeria 2 (DDiN2)' is founded programme which aims to contribute to the strengthening of Democratic governance in Nigeria. It is a 6 year programme with the strategic outcome of supporting the development of more efficient, effective and responsive political, electoral and Democratic institutions, through implementation of three components.

"We support well-prepared and well- administrated national and state elections, with measures in palce for independent observation, and to mitigate risks of violence; support to increase National assembly's (NASS) capacity for responsiveness in law-making, representation and oversight; and support to improve public participation in governance and electoral process, particularly women, youth and people living with disability (PWDS).
