Sudan: Agriculture Minister - Celebrating World Food Day for Raising Awareness On Hunger Eradication

Khartoum — The Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Engineer Hassab-Al-Nabi Musa has stressed that the State was keen to celebrate World Food Day in solidarity with the international community in raising awareness and consultation on eliminating hunger by 2030. This came during his speech at the occasion celebrating the World Food Day entitled: "Our Actions are Our Future - Eliminating Hunger by 2030 is Possible" in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the National Population Fund, the Ministry of Animal Resources, the Ministry of Health and the Sudanese Women's Union and in the presence of relevant bodies. The minister added that the country, through its strategy, has been working to achieve the goals of sustainable development to alleviate poverty through the implementation of the five-year program during the period 2015-2019, which aims to increase and diversify the production, increase exports and raise the proceeds of exports. He revealed that Sudan held partnership with the African Development Bank to train and raise the capacity of young people (50% women) in agriculture and entrepreneurial development through the pilot education approach implemented by the International African Institute (IGAF). He pointed out that the State was proceeding with the vertical expansion of human capital and the promotion of knowledge among young people to achieve sustainable development through which the elimination of hunger would be achieved in the future. For his part, the Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Baba Qana Ahmado said: "As we celebrate the occasion, we has have to take a step back to assess the global agricultural situation, hunger, food security and nutrition to develop a plan to achieve zero hunger," asserting that the eradication of hunger and all forms of malnutrition is a second goal of the sustainable development. "According to the latest estimates, the number of undernourished people in the world increased in 2017 for the third consecutive year. In that year, 821 million people were hungry, 11% of the world's population - one of every 9 people on the planet, most of them are farming families and living in poor rural areas of sub-Saharan Africa and South-East Asia.
