Kenya: Matiangi to Open New Police Internal Affairs Unit Office in Upper Hill

Nairobi — Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi will on Friday officially open the new National Police Service's Internal Affairs Unit offices at Upper Hill.

The unit has the mandate of receiving and investigating complaints against the police.

It was established under section 87 of the National Police Service Act, Chapter 84 Laws of Kenya with Sub- section 7 stating that it shall be located in a separate office from the rest of the service.

Among its objectives is to promote highest standards of professionalism and discipline and prevent corruption and promote transparency and accountability.

The function will be attended by the Inspector General of Police, Joseph Boinnet, top police commanders, development partners, members of the diplomatic corps, and other stakeholders.

The unit is expected to promote high standards of competence, integrity and respect for fundamental human rights freedoms as well as foster and promote relationships with the society.
