Mozambique: New Building Materials Laboratory Inaugurated

Maputo — Mozambique's Deputy Minister of Public Works, Victor Tuacale, has inaugurated a laboratory for the analysis and certification of materials for the building industry, in the northern Mozambican town of Namialo, according to a report in Wednesday's issue of the Maputo daily "Noticias".

The laboratory has been installed inside the Namialo Technology Centre, in Meconta district. It will be focused on locally available materials, and will also play a training role.

Tuacale declared that with the new laboratory, the building industry in northern Mozambique now has an important component for the quality control of the materials used in buildings in both the public and the private sectors. This should reduce the problems of quality noted in Mozambican building work.

The laboratory will reduce the costs of sending samples of building materials for analysis and certification by engineering laboratories, which previously only existed in Maputo and Beira. Tuacale thought this would reduce both construction costs and the time taken to deliver work.

He added that the laboratory will assist in the implementation of the government's housing policy, which depends on a massive expansion of low cost and resilient social housing.

Tuacale said the laboratory "is equipped to respond to the threats posed by climate change. These threats challenge the country to reform the traditional ways of building and to innovate".

He urged the Nampula Provincial Directorate of Public Works to ensure careful and rational use of the laboratory equipment, and the Meconta district government to ensure that nobody vandalises the equipment.

The laboratory was built with the support of the Brazilian government, under a project to boost Mozambican urban development.

The coordinator of the Brazilian public financial institution, the Caixa Economica, Jair Porto Alegre, said the laboratory will bring quality to the Mozambican building industry, and stressed the exchange of experiences between Mozambican and Brazilian staff on new civil construction technologies.
