Kenya: Muthaiga's Ngaruiya Prevails to Take Total Title On Home Course

Veteran Muthaiga golfer Sam Ngaruiya claimed the overall title during this year's Total Golf tournament which attracted a huge field of over 200 players at the par 71 Muthaiga Golf Club course at the weekend.

Playing off handicap 14, Ngaruiya, returned 17 points from the first nine where he bogeyed from the second to the third, dropped two shots at the sixth, and at the ninth. He, however, started the back nine well, rolling in a birdie putt, with six pars thereafter, for an impressive 22 points and a total of 39 to win by two points from men's winner Francis Ngigi.

In second place in the men's section was Mwai Mbuthia, who recovered from a 19 points score during Friday's Crown Paints grand finale, to post 36 points the following day. Ajay Vohora also on 36 was third while Wilson Mithamo claimed the top prize in the senior category with 33 points.

The junior title went to Walter K'Anjejo on 34 and Eunice Mwangi won the ladies prize with 37 points, three better than Rose Koome. In the guest section, Maureen Muhanda won with 36 ahead of Paul Kaumbutho on 30 after beating Renaldo Desouza on countback.

The staff prize went to Martin Mutuma on 31 points while winning the longest drive for men was Francis Ogolla as the ladies prize went to Mary Maingi and Sammy Gathuri won the nearest to pin prize.

At Ruiru Sports Club, Vet Lab Sports Club's Mercy Nyanchama carded nett 75 to claim the Silver Division title by two shots from Golf Park's Naomi Wakesho while Kiambu's Lucy Gachimbiri on 78 was third.

In the Bronze Division, Millicent Nduati carded an impressive nett 72 to win ahead of Catherine Wambui on 76 and Margaret Kamau was third on 78. In the men's subsidiary, former Ruiru chairman Ndung'u Mwaura posted 41 points to win ahead of Chris Andrea on 39 points while finishing third was John Kilonzo on 38 points.

At Kiambu Golf Club; Paul Muigai carded nett 73 to clinch the overall prize in the Friends from Sigona Golf event which attracted a small field of 65 golfers.

Muigai won by the narrow margin of one shot from Geoffrey Manguriu who carded nett 74 with David Kimani on 76 nett finishing third but after beating Paul Murumba on countback. In the ladies section, Wanjiru Karume carded nett 73 to win by a shot from Kiambu's leading lady golfer Joyce Wanjiru on nett 74 while Erick Kuria on 77 walked away with the guest prize.

At Thika Sports Club, Duncan Ndung'u clinched the A Division title on the monthly mug after firing nett 73, beating another single figure handicap golfer Simon Ndungu on countback.

In B Division, J.K. Mbugua also won with nett 73 two shots better than Major D. Ng'ang'a 75. In C Division it was Harun Mbugua who claimed the first prize after firing nett 74 with Raphael Nyamu on 75 finishing second. The ladies were led by M. Wainaina who posted nett 78.
