Somalia: IGAD Special Envoy Congratulates President-Elect of Puntland

Addis Ababa — The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Special Envoy for Somalia, Dr. Mohamed Ali Guyo has congratulated Said Abdullahi Deni upon his election today as the President of Puntland.

Guyo commended the Government of Puntland, Federal Government, regional parliament, traditional elders and all other stakeholders for the orderly, peaceful and transparent conduct of the elections.

He also praised the outgoing President Abdiweli Mohamed Ali Gaas and all other candidates in the election for their political maturity and good statesmanship in gracefully accepting the outcomes of the election.

The Special Envoy expressed his confidence that the President-elect will advance the causes of inclusive politics, peace and stability, economic development and consolidation of democracy in Puntland and beyond.

He urged the President-elect and all leaders of Somalia "to work together in uniting the country in the spirit of reconciliation and dialogue to help address political and socio-economic challenges facing the country".

The Special Envoy reaffirmed IGAD's commitment to work with the incoming administration and build on the existing cooperation with the regional state for the benefit of the people in Puntland and Somalia.
