Somalia: Al-Shabaab Launches Attack On Military Base Near Kismayo City

100 Shabaab ‘dead’ in battle

Heavily armed Al-Shabaab fighters have launched a daring attack on Somali military base located in a small village on the outskirts of Kismayo on Saturday morning.

In a statement, Al Shabaab said it has overrun the base and killed at least 41 government soldiers, a claim rejected by Jubbaland state army commander Aden Goojaar as baseless.

Al Shabaab added that its fighters stormed the camp in Baar-Sanguuni, approximately 50 kilometers north of Kismayo port city after detonating a massive car bomb at the gates.

Meanwhile, Jubbaland claimed it killed 77 militants in the attack and an airstrike conducted by suspected US warplanes in support of the local forces attack by the militants.

There was no independent source verifying both claims as the area is remote and villagers unwilling to speak to the media outlets, fearing their safety.
