South Africa: Sadtu Commends Swift Law Enforcement

SADTU Gauteng commends the law enforcement agencies and the contribution of Tsakane community for the apprehension of suspects linked to the stealing of equipment at Menzi Primary school. We are pleased with the recovery of some of the stolen items.

It was also brought to our attention that the principal and two staff members at Father Smangaliso Mkhatshwa Secondary school were also accosted by criminals wielding a gun in his office on Friday, 18 January 2019.The school principal, Mr Neo Maimane is a SADTU Provincial Treasurer.

The criminals fled with the union vehicle, iPad, cellular phone, two school projectors and some of their personal belongings .These criminals were also arrested later on the same day; all items except a few personal belongings were recovered.

We reiterate our long standing call for deployment of appropriately equipped professional security at schools and urge the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) to avail professional psychological services to the all the affected parties.

We further encourage all our communities to strengthen the protection of public schools as valuable assets at their disposal.
