Tanzania: Shell Tanzania Wins Govt Praise for Efforts to Save Environment

THE government has paid glowing tribute to Shell Tanzania Limited for what it describes as its splendid efforts towards conserving the country's envi- ronment.

In a rare commendation, the Minister of State in the Vice- President's Office, (Union and Environment) January Makamba told a forum discussing na- tional economy, efforts and ways of protecting Tanzania's environment over the weekend in Dar es Salaam that: "Shell Tanzania has been keen, to our admiration, on funding alternative charcoal projects.

"These projects have in- creased jobs. Furthermore, the efforts have motivated youths into conceiving new projects that will contribute towards pro- tecting our environment and this is commendable," he pointed out.

The Minister further said that their plough back into so- ciety of 600m/- to fund envi- ronmental projects was worth emulation, adding that he was happy and comfortable with their efforts, which proves joint concern and cooperation be- tween them and the government in promoting the national development through various means and methods.

He said that the forum was a display theatre to showcase locally made alternative char- coal that was keen on replacing deforestation, terming its theme as: 'Alternative Charcoal, Economy and Our Environment'.

During the occasion, it was noted that the assistance offered by Shell Tanzania was financing several polished energy projects, which were competitively selected by the Institute of Management and Entrepreneurship Development (IMED), and equally spent with condition that the latter oversees implementation of the projects and make them become sustainable.

On his side, IMED Direc- tor, Dr Donath Olomi, assured the government that they will ensure that the projects under their umbrella remain sustainable, adding that they have firm indications to show that alterna- tive energy initiatives are jointly pushed with the government and private sector, and make Tanzanians switch from traditional charcoal to environment- friendly types of alternative charcoal and progressively curb deforestation.
