Mariental will on Tuesday welcome The Namibian Newspaper Cup organising committee for a final inspection meeting as the town prepares to host the 2019 edition of the popular youth tournament from 19 to 22 April.
The Hardap region fended off Oshana and //Kharas' challenges to be this year's host of the eagerly anticipated regional under-20 football and netball competition.
The last time the region and the town of Mariental hosted the Newspaper Cup was in 2005 when they lost 1-0 to Otjozondjupa in the final, but they made amends to win the 2006 competition at Walvis Bay in the Erongo region. They were also the losing finalists in 2004.
As part of the criteria to host The Namibian Newspaper Cup, the host town must have a stadium with artificial or natural grass; have a minimum capacity for 2 000 people; suitable lighting for night games; as well as a good PA system.
Additionally, there should be acceptable accommodation for a delegation from each region, as well as for match officials, the Namibia Football Association (NFA), representatives from The Namibian newspaper, who cover every match, and also for auxiliary sponsors.
Having medical personnel on standby for the duration of the tournament, as well as catering and security arrangements are also among the prerequisites for hosting the cup.
The NFA and The Namibian newspaper retain the commercial rights to the competition.
