Nairobi — At least eight million people across the country have so far been enlisted under the National Integration Identity Management System (NIIMS), popularly referred to as Huduma Namba.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi while speaking on NTV Monday night expressed optimism that the target number will be registered within the set timelines.
He however said the registering kits will remain with the assistant chiefs even after the 45 days, to allow those who will have missed out to register.
"I don't think there will be any need to extend. By 18th of May, all people will be registered," he said.
The exercise is on its 14th day now in a registration window of 45 days since it was launched, during which the government hopes to develop a database for Kenyan citizens and foreigners living in the country.
Already, Kenya Defence Forces and the National Police Service chiefs have launched the exercise among the law enforcers.
"It will ultimately enhance national security among other national objectives," Chief of Defence Forces General Samson Mwathethe said on Monday.
According to General Mwathethe, some 63 servicemen have been trained, to register soldiers in areas seen as inaccessible.
Due to the nature of their work, General Mwathethe says KDF soldier's registration will take place in Barracks and military bases across the country.
Huduma Namba is a programme which was initiated through Executive Order No. 1 of 2018 to create and manage a Central Master Population Register which will be the authentic 'source of truth' of the identity of all people residing in Kenya.
For one to be registered, the government will require at least an identification document; this can either be a birth certificate, ID card, driving license or the Kenya Revenue Authority PIN.
A person registering will be required to provide give his name, gender, date of birth, age, citizenship, information about parents or guardians, place of birth, phone number, email address, physical and permanent residence, and marital status.
The government will also capture fingerprints and demographic data.
Among the benefits of having a Huduma Namba are easy access to government services, coordinated registration of people, it will address duplication in registration and reduce operational costs, detect and prevent fraud, impersonation or any other crime.
Other than enhancing service delivery, it will also enhance the crime watch in the country facing threats of terror.
