The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has intervened in a bizarre case where two identical girls claim to have been separated at Kakamega County Referral Hospital.

The unit has asked the families involved to make a report at its offices in Kakamega town.

In a tweet, the DCI said that "forensic investigations will establish if any criminal act was committed or any mitigating circumstances that may have led to the present status".

For the last two days, the story surrounding the meet up of the two girls; Sharon Mathias and Melon Luteyo who from looks appear identical, has caught the attention of the public. Saron has been living with Mevins as her fraternal twin.

"We encourage and appeal to the families concerned to please report to DCI office in Kakamega to facilitate the investigations," said the DCI.

RENTAL HOUSE

The DCI reaction comes at a time the girls, who were born in 1999, are preparing to leave their Kakamega for Nairobi later today where they also plan to stay with Melon's mother at her Kangemi rental house.

From a series of interviews, the two girls believe that they are identical twins and have tasked the government to help them get answers by conducting a DNA test on them.

Their looks have not only puzzled people known to them but also the mothers who separately brought them up in Nairobi and Kakamega.

Already, the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) offered to carry out the to conduct the DNA tests.

The girls have also said that they will not be separated even if the DNA tests prove otherwise insisting that they were now bonded by their similar looks.

Once the DNA tests prove that the girls are identical, then sleuths attached to the DCI will have to find out whether they were swapped intentionally or by mistake.
