Kenya: KNUT Officials Due in Court for Disrupting Curriculum Training

Nairobi — Four Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) officials are due in court Wednesday morning following their arrest in Kakamega where they were accused of disrupting the teachers' training on the new curriculum.

Police say the four are KNUT branch officials in the county who led a mob to force out teachers and trainers during a session at Shikoti Primary School.

The training was launched Tuesday by Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha who has also vowed that it will not be abandoned because it will jeopardise the start of the new curriculum which is in its pilot phase.

On Tuesday, Kibwezi KNUT Secretary Gabriel Kisilu was also arrested for disrupting the ongoing training in Wote Town.

Makueni County Commissioner Mohammed Maalim said Kisilu was arrested after disrupting training on the new curriculum at in Mutitu, Isungulu, Kisayani and Kibwezi township.

Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai has directed County and Sub-County commanders to ensure the four-day training of 91,000 teachers, which was launched by Education Cabinet Secretary Prof Magoha goes on uninterrupted.

In a statement, the IG of Police says they will not allow anyone to sabotage the exercise saying those aggrieved should follow the provided legal procedures to address their grievances.
