Uganda: Escaping Student Drowns in Pond

Emmanuel Nuwamanya, a senior four student of Muntuyera High school in Ntungamo district has drowned in a pond.

Nuwamanya reportedly escaped from school around 5:20pm on Tuesday evening with his friends to swim in the pond belonging to Yonah Kanyomozi, a neighbour to the school.

According to information obtained by our reporter, Nuwamanya's friends alerted the neighbours after realizing he had drowned. The neighbours then alerted the school administration.

The school authorities sought help from fishermen from Lake Nyabihooko to try and save the student but it was too late. Nuwamanya's body was retrieved from the pond after about an hour of searching.

The school head teacher, Joseph Twine Muganga confirmed the incident, saying the school administration is working closely with police to investigate the matter. Police have handed the deceased's body to Rwashamaire health center IV for postmortem.

Ntungamo district education officer, Odo Arigye describes the incident as unfortunate. He cautions students to desist from escaping from school, saying it is hard to guarantee their safety.
