Maun — North West district teams are preparing for the Botswana Games scheduled for end of 2019 in Gaborone.
The North West District, General Teams Manager, Tebogo Mogaetsho revealed this in an interview with BOPA on June 17 at an evaluation meeting aimed to introspect as well as prepare for the upcoming games.
Mogaetsho said they identified challenges that hindered the North West teams from reaching their potential, as they managed to attain position four overall in 2017, while individual sports codes of athletics and boxing managed to attain position one during the same games.
He therefore said they agreed to improve sensitisation on the Botswana Games and to lobby all stakeholders in the district for support.
He said lack of funds and resources to ensure participants reached the games' destination on time was a serious challenge, which limited their efforts.
Mogaetsho also said lack of camping or camping for a short period reversed the performance of participants.
He said with proper planning, they hoped to reach other parts of the district such as Seronga and villages on the other side of the Okavango Delta, to sensitise parents and unearth sports icons.
He noted that the North West team prided itself in producing icons of repute in various sporting codes such as athletics and football, in the likes of Omaatla Kebatho and Botshelo Mafoko.
Mogaetsho therefore appealed for support from sponsors to help the North West team in nurturing talent.
He said the team relied on administration support from the local authority as well as sports volunteers for coaches.
Meanwhile, he said the coaches have been encouraged to continue with preparations and selection for the block games to be held in September 2019, which will subsequently lead to the national games to be held in December.
