Botswana: All Eyes On Quick Silver, Strider

Gaborone — A fierce battle is expected between Chili's Quicksilver and Zorro's Golden Strider in the open males when the two dogs come face to face at Botswana Greyhound Association's Thuntsha Lerole Classic in Kanye on July 13.

The two dogs met three times this year, and it was Golden Strider who prevailed twice over Quicksilver.

Strider won the first Mmopane Sprint Classic but Quicksilver was quick to revenge during the second Mmopane classic. However, Strider claimed supremacy at the Gammabesi Epic Challenge, which angered Quicksilver.

Stakes will be high on July 13, as the two dogs take centre stage and both know the importance of winning the race.

Strider is lightning quick on take-off while Quicksilver has proved overtime that he can beat any opponent to the finish line.

Captain K is also a threat and should the two flatter, he will spoil the party and claim the bragging rights. On the line up, there is also Elvis, Fireball and Mr Johnny.

Strider's trainer, Kebone Sephatla said in an interview that the dog was not well endowed in endurance given that they would be running 500 metres. He, however, said Strider was quick in the take-off.

"I know if I can beat Quicksilver with take-off, it is going to be very difficult for him to recover or beat Strider to the finish line," he said.

Sephatla said despite that Strider was recovering from an illness, he was confident that he would take Quicksilver to the cleaners.

Quicksilver trainer and owner, Major Piet Gabosekwe said his dog was ready for the battle and was in a good condition.

He said more time at training was devoted to Hot Traser, which would be competing in the open females.

"I think Hot Traser is the fastest, but make no mistake Quicksilver is super fit, and I am confident that he will perform. What I can say is bring Strider on as we are ready for him," he said.

In the Under 9 speeds, Strong Guy will battle it out with Hiroshima, Overdrive and Zama, while Zorro, Earthquake, Junior and Black Ocean will compete in the Under 12 speeds.

In the Under 15 speeds category, there is Sotchi, No Doubt, Rumble Boy and Black Velvet while in the Under 18 speeds, the list is packed as it has Wild Angel, King Monada, Superman, Inferno, Fighter Jet, Wrong Turn, Follow the Leader, Sonic Flight and Extra Chilly.

For the crosses Under 18 category, there is Burning Spear, Amber, Bronx, Gripen and Bad Gir. Saulo is expected to face Drogbah, Pistorious, Motlhanka and Marry.

Another fierce battle is expected in the open females as the shy and modest Hot Traser will tussle it out with Ash, Hot Wave and Silver Dollar. The 200 metres challenge will see Mr Johnny, Extra Chilly and Sotchi on the track.
