Three men have died while digging for gold in Mwinilunga after a site they were working caved in, burying them alive early on Saturday morning.
Police said the trio were part of a family of 10 men that had joined the hordes of fortune-seekers drawn to an area of Mwinilunga in North-Western Province called Kasensele following reports of the discovery of gold deposits in the district.
Both North-Western Police Commissioner of Police Hudson Namachila and provincial Permanent Secretary Willies Manjimela confirmed the tragedy in separate interviews.
Mr Namachila said the incident occurred on Saturday around 04:00 hours at Kasemuka stream in Mulopa village of Chief Chibwika.
