Nigeria: Gunmen Attack Convoy of Nasarawa Deputy Governor, Kill 5 Policemen

Lafia — Five policemen lost their lives when gunmen attacked the convoy of the Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, Dr Emmanuel Akabe on Tuesday Evening around Akwanga.

A source said the attack happened at a hill in Akwanga Local Government Area, popularly referred to as "Many have gone". It is a road that was carved in-between a rock.

The source said the deputy governor was travelling from Lafia to Abuja when he was attacked around 7pm.

A witness said the gunmen were armed robbers, who were robbing motorists, when the convoy of the deputy governor reached the place.

"The police escort attached to the deputy governor engaged them in gun duel, but the robbers killed five of the policemen," he said.

The deputy governor, who escaped unhurt, escorted the dead back to Lafia.

The dead bodies were deposited at the mortuary of the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital (DASH) in Lafia.

A police source said they are they still gathering information before talking to the press.
