The East London cluster commander, Brigadier Mhlangenqaba Kanuka, East London station commander, Brigadier Mxolisi Mqotyana and Cambridge station commander Brigadier Pumla Mdlankomo accompanied by the Mdantsane cluster's Women's network and Men for Change visited the home of the late Leighandre Jegels who was brutally shot and killed and her mother seriously wounded on the Voortrekker Road, East London last week.
Speaking to the family, Brigadier Mdlankomo told them that the Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga has requested them to visit this family on her behalf as she is away on business. "We are here to pray and cry with you during this dark moment," she said. She also mentioned that they are not here because the perpetrator was a police officer but only because they are the victims of gender based violence which the SAPS does not condone. She further appealed to the family not associate this unfortunate incident with the men and women in blue. "The fight against gender based violence is the priority of the SAPS ", she concluded.
