Kenya: Pupil Commits Suicide After Teacher Chides Her for Soiling Uniform With Menses

11 September 2019

Angry parents on Tuesday afternoon stormed a school after a standard six pupil committed suicide after being chided by her teacher for soiling her dress with her menses in class.

The commotion disrupted learning at Kabiangek Primary School in Konoin Constituency, Bomet as the parents demanded for the arrest of the female teacher.

The mother of the pupil, Beatrice Chepkurui, claims that after the incident in class her daughter left the school and returned home where her mother told her to go and fetch water to clean herself then head back to school.

She would later be found dangling on a tree at their tea farm.

The mother claims her daughter hang herself out of shame after being humiliated in front of her classmates.

On Tuesday afternoon, parents from the school accompanied the girl's mother in protesting at the institution, where they condemned the teacher and management for failing to protect the pupil.

They demanded an explanation from the management of the school, saying it was wrong for a teacher to humiliate the girl in the presence of fellow pupils over something as natural as menstruation.
