In an effort to promote stakeholder interaction and information sharing and consider concerns within communities, the MEC for Transport and Community Safety the Hon. Namane Dickson Masemola, accompanied by the SAPS Seshego Cluster Commander Major General Sam Mokgonyana, the SAPS Seshego Station Commander Brigadier Lucas Hlako, the SAPS Provincial Commander of Media Relations Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe and the Cluster and Station management have on Tuesday, 05 November 2019, interacted with the communities around the Seshego area through a community outreach program at the Seshego Police Station Lapa.
In attendance, were the Provincial Community Policing Board Chairperson Mr France Kgasago, the Provincial Chairperson of Community Safety Forum, Mr Kgoruhle, the Municipal Councillors, the Community leaders, the Community Police Forum structures and members of the community from different areas of the Seshego Cluster.
Some of the concerns raised by community members include:
* Lack of adequate resources at Seshego Police Station which impact severely on the response time by the Police when crimes are reported.
*Safety of the community police forums, their training and stipend were also raised as matters which need an intervention by the Department because they are sometimes being targeted by the criminals.
* The MEC was also requested to intervene on incidents of corruption by some members of the South African Police Service. They also proposed that the Community Police Forums and the Community Safety Forums must be integrated for the effective partnership Policing. They also requested the Satellite Police Station for the areas of Blood River and Mmotong because of the high rate of crimes experienced in the area.
In his response, on behalf of the South African Police Service, Major General Mokgonyana informed the audience that at this stage, as the Cluster, they have purchased 60 reflector Jackets for the Community Police Forum Patrollers and they are still going to add them. He further encouraged all community members to participate fully and effectively in the fight against crime.
He assured the MEC and the masses that all the complaints involving cases which were allegedly not handled and investigated properly, will be attended to and feedback will be given to the MEC in the near future.
In addition, Major General Mokgonyana informed the audience that there is a move on the establishment of a Satellite Police Station in Moletjie head kraal which will cover all the areas in that corner including Blood River and Mmotong. The community based crime prevention initiatives being the Community Police Forum Patrollers, the sector forums, the streets committees and the neighbourhood watch must be activated and be operational immediately.
The MEC has responded to all the concerns raised in full, encouraging all members of the community to participate effectively in the fight against crime. He assured the community that a pilot project will be established specifically to come and address all the crime related concerns through further engagements and the Multi-disciplinary joint operations.
