Namibia: Shanghala Reminds Nujoma to Endorse Geingob

Founding president Sam Nujoma today endorsed Swapo president Hage Geingob as the ruling party's sole candidate in this month's presidential election.

Nujoma, who spoke at a Swapo campaign rally at Oshikuku in the Omusati region, initially left the podium after concluding his address to the people attending the meeting without pronouncing himself on the party's presidential candidate.

However, justice minister Sacky Shanghala ran up to the former president and whispered into his ear as Nujoma was leaving the podium.

Nujoma then returned to the podium to declare Geingob as the sole presidential candidate for the party.

"To make it categorically clear, that we have only one candidate and that candidate is president Hage Geingob, for the Swapo Party and for the Republic of Namibia," Nujoma said.

Nujoma's pronouncement thus countered perceptions that he was backing independent presidential candidate Panduleni Itula - also a Swapo member - for the country's presidency.
