13 November 2019

A gas cylinder exploded causing the night inferno at the Mombasa Hospital on Tuesday, police have said.

Coast region police commander Rashid Yakub said preliminary investigations show that the fire broke out at the kitchen at around 8.30pm.

"We cannot also ascertain the extent of the damage caused but we are lucky to have no life lost. We will be able to get more details as soon as we put out the fire. There is loss of property and we cannot immediately tell the amount lost," Mr Yakub told journalists during an address at the scene.

There was panic at the hospital when the fire started forcing some patients to run out of the facility.

Mombasa County Commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo confirmed that all the patients had been accounted for and the fire was also being contained.

"I want thank the rescuers who came in to help get the patients from their wards. It is an excellent job done. Everybody is safe for now but we will get to assess the damage caused on the property," Mr Kitiyo said.

Mombasa county officials led by the Deputy Governor Dr William Kingi, County Executive for Health Ms Hazel Koitaba, Health Chief Officer Dr Khadija Shikely were among leaders who visited the hospital.

"We are here today after we heard news of the fire outbreak. We are happy with the kind of response we have seen and the coordination from the County Fire brigade, Kenya Navy, Kenya Ports Authority, Kenya Airports Authority, National Youth Service, the County Disaster team, the Kenya Red Cross Society, St Johns Ambulance and the entire team," Dr Kingi said.

"We have faith that this fire will be contained, thanks to our able members of the fire brigade. We have at least seven fire engines at the scene and there are no casualties from patients and hospital staff," the Deputy Governor said.

He added that all the patients at the facility had been accounted for and there was no cause for worry.

Patients under critical care were evacuated to Pandya Memorial, Aga Khan, Premiere and Coast Provincial General Hospital.
