Nigeria: Kano Pillars Beat Akwa Starlets 2-1 in Uyo to End Winless Run

5 December 2019

After a poor run that saw them go over 493 minutes without scoring a goal, former champions, Kano Pillars recorded their first victory of the 2019 Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL, season yesterday after they defeated newly promoted Akwa Starlets 2-1 in their rescheduled week 2 match played at the Godswill Akpabio International stadium in Uyo.

Before the victory, Pillars had drawn 0-0 with Rivers United in their opening match of the season at home, lost 0-1 to Lobi Stars in Kano, drew 0-0 with Wikki Tourists, lost 0-1 to Jigawa Golden Stars and forced Plateau United to 0-0 draw in Jos in week 6.

Kano Pillars were the only team on the NPFL table without a goal in their kitty after five matches even as they had conceded two, one against Lobi Stars and the other against Jigawa Golden Stars.

Following the return of their talismanic captain Rabiu Ali, Pillars picked a valuable away point in a 0-0 draw with Plateau United before heading down south to Uyo to battle Akwa Starlets who are temporary placed third on the table.

Consequently, only a few people gave Pillars any chance of winning against the youngsters who had recorded two away draws at Delta Force and Heartland as well as a massive 2-0 away win against Enugu Rangers in week 5.

However, Pillars proved too big for Akwa Starlets to handle as they benefitted from burly striker Nyima Nwagua's brace to record their first victory of the season.

In the 27 minute of the match, the member of Home-based Super Eagles was assisted by Rabiu Ali to score Pillars first goal of the season but Moses Effiong equalised for Akwa Starlets in the 75th minute.

Although the host piled more pressure on the visitor as they searched desperately for their fourth victory of the season, it was Pillars who laughed last as Ali once again assisted Nwagua to score his second of the afternoon in the 78th minute to hand his side the maximum points.

With the crucial away victory, Pillars have moved out of relegation zone to 15th on the table and will return home to face Delta Force in MatchDay 7 on December 8.a
